Hope looks very comfy in her lovely blankets there! Really good news that the transfusion went well – you are doing such a great job & I imagine you’ve been worried sick about her. I’m so glad you’ve found us here & you can ask us about anything you’re concerned about. I expect the vet warned you about a bit of a fall in PCV in the next few days after the transfusion, so please don’t worry if that happens – it’s normal – & she may need several small transfusions to keep her stable at the beginning of treatment until the drugs start to work.

Azathioprine side effects – my dog Worzel was on that drug & it worked brilliantly for him, with no side effects at all – very important to always give it with food. Some dogs don’t tolerate it so well though (usually smaller dogs, but not always) & can get pancreatitis – giving it with food will minimise the risk of side effects. You need to look out for vomiting & bloody diarrhoea, severe tummy pain (back arching, crying) – if you are worried, don’t give another dose of it until you have had Hope checked out by the vet. I hope it works as well for her as it did for Worzel.

Don’t forget to give any kind of tummy protectant (e.g. zantac, slippery elm, sucralfate) at least one hour after any of the other drugs because you will prevent those other important drugs being absorbed properly. 2-3 hours is advised between tummy protectors in the mycophenolate mofetil leaflet, so careful planning – if you need help with making a drug chart, just ask. I am a huge fan of sucralfate – I gave Worzel a 1 gramme tablet as his late night tummy soother – it was really effective. The slippery elm is excellent too.

I hope I haven’t overloaded you with information & I know Patrice has already advised you about giving her aspirin – that’s very, very important to prevent abnormal clotting, which they are very prone to with IMHA. I normally nag everyone about that!! Whatever we can do to help you get through this, you only have to ask.

Whooppeeeee on that lovely PCV. He’s doing brilliantly without the cyclo. That ALT is not too bad – nothing to stress about – are you using Denamarin still? Or similar?

I’m sorry Bingo is having knee/leg problems – he loves to give you something to think about, the little monkey. If it got better temporarily, that is a GOOD sign – maybe he’s just pulled something. Keeping him quiet is good advice until the vet has had a good look though. Is it possible those pins are causing a problem because of the muscle loss now? Maybe they will want to x-ray it, or maybe with a bit of feeling around they will be able to tell you which bit is actually painful. And he’s not OLD !!! Anaesthetics are very good nowadays, Vally, but we’re jumping the gun here. I’m no expert on strapping for legs, I’m afraid – they tend to chew these things & you’d have to be careful to maintain good circulation, so it may not be possible. I know strapping works really well for some human knee conditions, but the tape is mega-sticky – not a good mix with dog hair! Sorry I’m not much help on this one – fingers crossed that he has just wrenched something that will get better on it’s own.

This is the BEST news – I am so happy there is a definite improvement & the antibiotics are making her feel better now – what a relief for you. You have made my evening – that balance problem will slowly come back to normal – that in itself will make Maggie a much happier girl. I hope the palsy will also improve even more with the treatment. You are doing such a brilliant & conscientious job with her – I don’t know how you keep up with it all when you have young children to look after & a very busy life!

PS they are both on the bed, waiting impatiently for bedtime treats – this is their favourite fun & cuddle time. I wonder why our bed is always full of crumbs & dog hairs?

Keep an eye just in case on the seizure front (remember they are rare) with the Baytril – dogs & avocado don’t get on – it is not good for them at all, so a message to your young Maggie – don’t go stealing that guacamole again! My Worzel is a terrible thief too. Sheena & avocados don’t get on either – give me terrible tummy ache & … well you don’t want to hear that bit.

Sorry you’ve lost you post – it happens to me now & again. How are Maggie’s ears doing? And her balance? And her palsy? I hope you are seeing an improvement now. It is always a pleasure to help you with anything we can, Jen.
