I’m just catching up with what’s been happening for Emily. I’m sorry she was so unwell with the pancreas problems – how is she going now? Her poor skin too, but from reading what others have said, it seems this is not uncommon and hopefully the vet can shed some light on whether there is any infection present. If you’re worried about gum colour, perhaps it would be a good idea to have a PCV check?

Sorry for neglecting you for a couple of days. How is Emily’s skin now? Worzel got very scruffy & flaky & his hair didn’t hardly grow back at all where he had been shaved – they are prone to infections too – it’s the pred, I’m afraid. Worzel had a horrible infected leg wound which didn’t heal up either – I just persevered with cleaning & dressing it twice a day with an antibiotic treatment cream. When we lowered the pred, everything started to heal & grow, so you just have to get through this stage as well as you can really. Of course, any sign of a staph infection, you need antibiotics straight away – don’t let it go on because they have no resistance to infection.
I also wanted to say all dog’s gums look pale when they are at rest – always check them when they have been moving around & are fully awake. I had a few frights with Worzel, thinking he looked pale, but when he was active, they were pink again. If you think Emily’s gums are always pale or are in any doubt, get a PCV check done at the vets to put your mind at rest. Is she due for a check-up soon?

Just trying to catch up a bit and am delighted to see that Mr Ashki is doing fabulously well. That’s fantastic! I hope by now that he has been able to have some fun running about with his friends. Have you started raw feeding? I am still too scared with Mable, although she supplements her own diet with poor raw things from time to time. You certainly sound busy, but agreed it’s a very better busy than a year ago. I cannot believe it’s a whole year. You have done so, so well to get Ashki to this point Tamara, and no-one could have done more.
Please give that boy love and cuddles from us, as ever.

I’m so glad you found us – we have all been through this horrible illness too, so you have support from each & every one of us. There is a lot to take in when you first hear the diagnosis & I was overwhelmed myself. But I was determined to get Worzel better. It will be a long fight, Marla, but they can get better with the right treatment.
Vally & Patrice have given you great advice. I would like to emphasise that your vets need to look hard for the cause of this – the trigger. It is important to eliminate the cause, if possible. Sometimes, we never do find out why it happened, but some dogs have perhaps contracted a tick disease or other infection – that was what happened to my dog. I would also recommend that an additional immuno-suppressant, preferably cyclosporine, be added to the treatment, also stomach protection – vital because the drugs such as prednisone & so on are very harsh on the tummy – the last thing you want is a bleed in the GI tract. Denamarin is also important – it will protect the liver from the drugs & provide building blocks for new blood cells.
It would be very useful to us if you can send the blood tests & blood smear results to us via the Urgent Advice link.
I was also feeling hopeless at times, thinking Worzel was going to die & wondering if I was doing the right thing. Getting Worzel specialist help & finding this wonderful group of people were the best things I could have done. My wonderful specialist here in France was very happy to work with Dr Jean Dodds (Patrice has mentioned her fantastic organisation) if necessary. She is truly a big help to us all – most of us have consulted with her at one time or another.
Don’t get despondent, please, Marla – although this disease is serious, most dogs do recover & go into remission. Keep positive for sweet Dewey – he will feel your positive vibes.
I do understand how much there is to take in & it’s not easy – Patrice has done some great videos for the site which explain things very well.
