Tara,
I think Sheena hit the nail on the head! Most dogs end up with a scruffy coat when they are on these meds. Once you can reduce or even take them off completely the coat will come back beautifully. In the mean time the coconut oil or a good fish oil seems to be a good idea.
Best wishes,

Better safe than sorry & get them checked out. Is it possible it’s just a tiny bit of Calcinosis Cutis? Are they hard or soft? I would of thought you’d see a pustule with staph & it would be itchy or sore, red & inflamed too. I found some spotty, tiny growth like things on Worzel & I think the vet is right – it’s still little bits of calcium coming out of this system from the prednisone treatment, even though he doesn’t take it any more. They tend to drop off or disappear on their own after a while.
If you have any antibiotic ointment hanging around, you could put it on just in case, but check it’s OK for ears. Or try some chlorhexidine BUT you mustn’t get it anywhere near the ear canal or in eyes/nose. The only thing is that both of these ideas might ruin the vet’s chances of diagnosing, so maybe it’s better to wait until tomorrow. I bet it’s really putting him off his food (not)!

Hi Tara
Sounds like Iatrogenic Cushings which is not exactly a disease in itself, it’s secondary to or caused by taking the pred. Vally’s idea sounds good. I read coconut oil is good for the skin & coat & thyroid as well. I know Diablo’s not on a high dose now, but it does take an age for the pred side effects to reduce. Worzel started looking like a scruffy old doormat (sorry Worzel!), but when we got the pred right down, he started to regrow a proper coat. His skin also turned black in places & I know now this was the pred – it took about 9 months after he was off the pred for his skin to slowly return to pinky normal.
In the AIHA terms about the adrenal glands I wrote “High doses of prednisone during treatment for AIHA/IMHA also causes symptoms of Cushings Disease.” You have made me think I should do something for Cushings specifically – I promise to write that a.s.a.p! Apologies for that. I did include “poor coat” in the long term side effects of the prednisone though. Always let me know if there is something you need to know about that’s not in the terms – it’s a work in progress & can easily be added to.
Let us know about the urine culture – how’s Diablo doing through the night now? Hope he’s improved with the antibiotics.
Loads of love from me, Worzel & Ollie too!
Hi Vally!
Your boy Bingo is a cheeky superstar indeed – it is amazing the little differences you notice when you keep lowering the pred, even though it IS very scary. I know what you mean about the pain – I think we all dread having to alter anything because of a problem other than AIHA & of upsetting that wobbly apple cart. I never used to be paranoid like this either, but I openly admit that every little unusual thing has me worrying! I hope the eight of a pill works out – sounds like the best idea to me.
