this is really strange, I have never come across a dog having pink eyes. Are you sure it is pink and not yellow? Sorry, that might sound silly, I know you know the difference between yellow and pink. It could be that he has jaundice, the liver struggling with all the medications. But like I said his eyes would be yellow.
We all here totally understand the panic, we have been there. The slightest change gets you into a state of worry. Most of the times we worry for nothing, but you certainly don’t want to miss anything. I am glad you are seeing the vet tomorrow. It could well be an infection. These dogs have a very suppressed immune system and are very much exposed to any infection. Urinary tract infections are very common so why not an eye infection. Just because I have not heard it does not mean it can not happen. It would make sense and I am sure it would be easily treated with antibiotics. One thing that we always say is, this disease is like a roller coaster. It hits you hard and then the dog gets better and you are so happy. Before you know it there is something else. It is two steps forward one step back. The main thing is that you focus on moving forward and don’t let that little step back discourage you. The fact that Carsten is more like himself is huge! The side effects of the drugs are not nice, but he will slowly but surely get better!

I’m sorry to hear of all that you’ve have been through in this journey. Do you know why the vet diagnosed AIHA? I agree absolutely with Sheena advising the cautious approach when weaning off medication. Slowly and steadily. I’m glad that you have found us and I hope we will be able to support you and Teddy with this.

Hi again Mr Jones

Just had a good in depth read of what you’ve said. We’ve had a few cases here where the pet did NOT strictly/actually have AIHA/IMHA – they just had a severe anaemia which responds to antibiotics & short term prednisone/prednisolone. I wonder if Teddy is one of those cases? Without historical blood results, it’s hard to say. Weanin g them off these nasty drugs is always advisable, but NEVER at the cost of a relapse. You will find us all very cautious on here when it comes to the speed of drug reductions, but we truly believe in using the smallest possible dose to keep them safe.

I really would like to see more information regarding his blood work numbers, particularly his hematocrit (PCV) upon diagnosis.

We would love you to join us – it’s absolutely certain that some antibiotics trigger this disease. Their withdrawal, plus appropriate immuno-suppressants can reverse the anaemia. I’m really sorry to hear this has happened. We do have a “work i n progress” list of drugs that can cause AIHA/IMHA or bone marrow failure in dogs, cats, humans

It will never be complete as new drugs arrive on the market continually – it’s also difficult to quantify the risk level.

Good for you Linda, to focus on how Sadie is feeling, acting and not on those darn numbers! She has two lovely boyfriends in France and also two very good looking poodle friends here in Canada that are crossing toes for her! Wonderful that Sadie is eating because I think all these boys love the curvy hips on her. Keep it up little girl, you can do it!
