- Diablo :(
Hi Tara, I’m glad to hear you think he may be a little better. Even a very little better IS better and we’re all hoping it’s better and BETTER.
I know the vision upsets you but dogs are amazing creatures and it doesn’t upset them anywhere near as much as it worries us.
I suspect Bingo’s vision has deteriorated in the last year or so. In fact just this morning we discussed he’s getting a fringe cut tonight as his hair is in his eyes which no doubt makes it worse – he just ignored me. I’ve been meaning to do it for a few days but tonight’s the night – he hates having his hair cut, feet fuzz trimmed, or heaven forbid nails trimmed – what a drama queen!!!!
Anyway, when I get home from work, dad is often out the front waiting for me (dad’s 90 and has been on his own all day so he’s keen for company and he and Bingo wait out the front). When dad sees me, coming down the road (I can come from two different ends, depending on the bus I’ve caught), he lets Bingo out. Dad says “there’s Vally” Bingo spins around facing the top of the street and looks and looks. Dad says “there”. Bingo spins around the other way and looks and looks. Dad says “there” he’ll spin around again and etc etc. This will go on until I’m almost home and he recognises it’s me. If I whistle, he’ll start wagging his tail and come towards me. I am fairly sure he can’t see me very well. Also when we’re in the park, he often loses me. I can tell when he starts to worry – he’ll start heading off towards anybody at all and sniff them – he’s looking for me. I have to continually call him to guide him back to me.
I’m ranting again…
My niece’s mother’s dog has just gone totally blind (from diabetes). Happened instantly one day. Everyone told her it wasn’t fair and to let the dog go. She resisted as she loved her little friend. The little dog adapted very quickly and now trots around the house with very little difficulty. Sure, it runs into things occasionally, but really, isn’t suffering at all.
Hurry and get better Diablo and no more funny business please, or else.
Lots of love, Vally & Bingo.
Hi Tara
It sounds like he’s recovering more quickly than last time to me. If the nystagmus has nearly gone, that’s great! Don’t worry too much about the vision just yet – it’s only been a week & we know it can take much longer than that to get better. As Brigitte & Vally have said, dogs don’t think in the same way as us & they cope amazingly well with disabilities – they just get on with living their lives. Because he loves you so very much, he is happy being close to you. It’s hard to be patient, I know.
Sprockett developed cataracts (maybe we should call them dogaracts????) quite quickly after his vestibular episode & I know his vision wasn’t great, but he didn’t care – he was always a happy chap & nothing ever phased him. If they struggle with their vision, it’s good to always keep furniture & things in the same position, so they get their bearings & they manage really well.
I think about Diablo & you all the time – all my friends have been asking how he is too!
Loads of love, Sheena, Worzel & Ollie
Hi Tara. I’m glad to hear he’s heading in the right direction (healthwise) – even though his sight may not seem to be stellar right now, here’s hoping he regains his sight.
I agree with Sheena and Vally – dogs don’t worry about such things – they do adapt. I met a young man last year, walking his beautiful little dog that he had just rescued/adopted. He told me that she was born blind, zero sight. That’s why he and his wife picked her. He said her spirit was incredible – and it was. She was extremely friendly to me AND Sadie.
And, I don’t know if anyone recalls me writing about a little cocker spaniel named Obo. A friend of mine found him, matted, just dropped off in her neighborhood. He could barely see as he horrible cataracts. It was determined that this precious little guy is about 5 years old and was able to see only shades of grey/white, almost blind in both eyes. She took him in, although she already had (and still has) a house full of older, ailing, abused and/or neglected dogs (I think Obo made 13!). I couldn’t take him and no one else wanted him. So my friend still has him to this day and he’s an awesome, mischifious little boy.
When I visit Decatur, sometimes I take him for walks with Sadie and he does run into things if I’m not careful, but he just backs up and then keeps on going. He actually gets along great.
Obo was not born that way, he lost his eyesight due to poor nutrition and neglect – he had really bad cataracts. When my friend saw him, he was going up the front yard side walks to the front doors, would sit there, wait a bit, and then go back down and to the next front side walk, to the front door. She watched him do this several times, until she called to him and he came to her voice – that was it – she added him to her mix at home. Of all the dogs in her home now – Obo rules the house! She says he gets along great – even manages the stairs AND he sleeps with her and her husband every night.
So, it may tear us up to see them this way, but they really do regroup and manage far better than humans. And even though he is not in pain, I know it’s hard for you to see this. Diablo is so fortunate to have your love and devotion to his care.
I think that the common thread here on this forum is our unending and unselfish love for (our) animals – so much so that it hurts often. And you, my dear Tara, are exceptional in your love and caring. Try not to pine – know you are the best thing that has ever happened to Diablo, because he knows.
Hang in there. Love and hugs, Linda
PS – On a lighter note: I just cooked organic kale for Sadie’s food mix. Yuck – it really does stink, doesn’t it?!!! I have to cook it in the crock pot OUTSIDE (my husband gags when I do it inside – ha). I just fed her a few little pieces instead of a treat for going outside like such a good girl. I’m thinking, “this is really a dirty trick” as it was plain, in no food mixture. No, she scarfed it down – more like inhaled it! To Sadie, the slinkier the better -silly girl. :)
Oh Linda thank you for your kind words…you made me cry. And Sheena thank you for always thinking of us…it touches me too that your friends have been asking about Diablo. Well Diablo is a fighter….Diablo has had a good couple of days…definite improvement. Much more stable…eating on his own now too. He is still a little unstable and shifts to the left a bit but much better. I still think he has lost some sight but he is coping. We are taking it day by day but I am feeling so much more hopeful than I was last week…..thanks everyone!!
Tara, I’m absolutely thrilled to hear that Diablo is looking better.
Love Vally & Bingo
I hope you and Diablo had a good day. Please continue to keep us posted.
Love and hugs, Linda and Sadie
