Hi Beth,
I think that the prednisone dose Heathcliff was given initially is way to high. The highest I have ever heard is 2mg/lb. I am kind of wondering how much experiance your vet has with this disease. Have you considered consulting with an internal medicine specialist or Dr. Dodds? If you click on Second Chance Resources you see Hemopet resourses and you find out about Dr. Dodds there. While the liver values are worrying, what also worries me, is Heathcliff on any stomach protection. If not I would get on that RIGHT AWAY! Sucralfate or Carafate are a must with these high doses or you will for sure see him with stomach ulcers.
I am so sorry your boy has to go through this and hopefully you can find a balance between suppressing his immune system and not over dosing him.

You & Koda have had a rough journey. Good on you for looking around for someone else to help – I truly hope this new lady will have a good plan for supporting Koda. Sometimes the ones you think are a bit mad are the best! Sounds like Koda is a very happy boy & you are being a great Mum, keeping him comfortable & well fed. I don’t blame you on the 3 month check-up. I went to the local vets & got a CBC done every month to put my mind at rest!

Hi Patrice,
thanks for feeding me more and more on that subject! Pardon the pun:) I find it so incredibly interesting. That is also why I organized that seminar with a holistic vet. Funny she used exactly the same experiment, us eating a cracker to explain about the enzymes in our saliva.She also used sesame snaps for us and large pieces of dried liver to show us how differently the jaw of people and dogs work. Ripley was happy to take part in the experiment and show how he bites off with his molars if one does not let go of the treat. Then the funny thing, Marlene showed us what it said on the sesame snap package: gluten free! Sesame seeds and honey:) She made a point about marketing (kibble). I knew kibble is not ideal but this was the first time I got a scientific explanation why. But you know all that.
Now I also understand the issue with prednisone and ulcers. I knew it was a problem but did not really know why. Always so much to learn… But now I go outside it is a beautiful sunny day!

Hi Mike. I have been MIA over weekend – sorry. But wanted to pipe in quickly about the PetTinic.

From my understanding, it is already helping. Sadie was on this from day one (thank you Dr. Hamilton and Dr. Dodds!), since onset in March 2009. The only time she has been off it was last September 2014, when we THOUGHT we could wean to to a very low 2.5MG prednisone (only) daily. I stopped the PetTinic too. She relapsed in October. We immediately started her back on 20MG prednisone (only, no other immune supressant), tummy protection, liver protection and anti-clotting AND PetTinic. Her PCV rebounded in one week to 30% (from relapse of 20% – she has never gone real low, but collapses, never the less). I swear by PetTinic – Sadie will most likely be on a maintenance dose if prednisone and PetTinic for life.

So glad to hear Lola is maintaining! Way to go!! Will check in later – on phone – please excuse typos.
