Hi Alyssa, and welcome to you and the gorgeous Sassy!

I’m really sorry that you are going through this nightmare. We’ve all been through it and know how frightening it is. I think you also mentioned the speed at which it takes hold, which is so true. My cat, Molly, had a rare form of IMHA in 2013. It seems as though Sassy is doing really well, so well done to you and your vet! I’m so pleased to know that she seems to have turned a corner. Clever girl!

I’m so sorry to hear about Sadie. It is always so hard to lose them, however young or old they are. They are such a part of the family.

Thank you for taking the time to tell us Sassy’s story. It is heartbreaking indeed, but heartwarming too, to know that there are people like you who love and care enough to turn her life around. I’ve never understood how someone can just move away and leave their animals behind, but to do that and also neglect and misuse them is beyond comprehension. I’m just so glad that Sassy found you.

You are doing an awesome job in looking after her, and she looks like the sweetest girl. Give her a big hug from us, and one for you too.

Hi Susie

How is Emily doing? Has she had her bath yet? I read poor Anna’s story about Jackie’s bath, which must have been so scary. I bathed my cats on a couple of occasions (crazy right? To be sure) Cats and baths really don’t mix, and I ended up with poor, bedraggled, skinny looking creatures, and a soaking wet, scratched to pieces, fur covered and slightly hysterical owner. Seriously though, having read Anna’s story I think you are right to hold off on the bath for now if it can wait.

I am sorry to hear about Sadie’s UTI. These things always seem to happen all at once don’t they?

Your vet sounds ace, and I’m really glad she is happy to go with the sucralfate and stopping the Vitamin K. Wonderful to hear that Emily’s PCV is going up. That’s the best news! Has your vet thought about adding in some anti-clotting medication? I *think* I am right in saying that liver enzymes are often high due to the drugs, and that the denamarin should help with this. Regenerative is a good word! I like that!

Dear Amy.

I’m so sorry to read about all you are going through with JD. How is he doing? I’m very glad to know that you have a great vet and specialist on board – that is so important. Patrice has given you a lot of excellent information about splenic nodules and I hope that has been helpful. I know I learnt a lot reading it. Has JD now seen the specialist? What’s the plan with regards to his treatment?

Fantastic! He’s doing so well! What lovely news :) It’s great that you are able to do some work at home, that really helps. Jury service? I’ve always thought that could be very interesting, but it’s a scary prospect too. I hope it will go alright and won’t be too stressful.

You are really worried – just like I was – perfectly understandable. I promise we have all been through this – I can remember thinking Worzel looked paler, then got a nice surprise when his PCV was actually higher. I also used to look at the pink bits in the corner of Worzel’s eyes – you can see how pink these are too. Because Worzel is pale skinned, I can actually see how pink his tummy etc is. You may not be able to if Tiger is darker skinned.

Remember when Tiger is at rest, especially when he is asleep or just waking up, his gums will be pale. Dogs have the ability to store a lot of their blood in their spleen. It acts like a big bag of blood that can be pumped out at an incredible rate – for example when they suddenly wake up & start chasing something. Unlike me who takes an hour to come round! So make sure you check the gums when he is fully alert. Have look at this too:

You must also trust your instincts – no-one knows Tiger as well as you do. How is Tiger acting? If he is lively, happy & eating OK, he is OK. How is he doing with the antibiotics? It is possible that the cephalexin can affect their bloods, but he has to be treated with it to get rid of the staph infection – you have no choice.

If you are not happy about Tiger’s gums when he is wide awake & alert, get a PCV check to make sure all is well .The only thing that ever put my mind at rest was to go & get a PCV done – believe me, I worried myself sick too. Any doubt, contact the specialists if you are not confident about the local vet’s equipment etc. I assume they have limited cover over the Easter period? Why this always happens to us during public holidays is one of life’s annoying mysteries!

I am around for a couple of hours until our friends arrive – I will check in on here as often as I can. One of us is usually around to help.

Don’t worry – it gets you nowhere. Re-check those gums & let us know how Tiger is.

Hi Alyssa,
it looks like you are totally in tune with your girl! I am glad she is interested in food now and I bet you were exited to see her greet your dad. I think how they feel and act is sometimes more important than what their PCV is. I remember being exited when my dog shook himself the first time after getting ill. I never realized how much energy shaking themselves takes for them. Then I started to wish he would shake himself and it would all be over and he would be healthy again. Unfortunately it all takes a lot of time so be patient. You have such a good attitude and instinctively do what is right for Sassy, you rock girl!

She must be feeling much better if she is perky now & again – it’s all thanks to you doing a great job! Good news all round.

Alyssa – couldn’t agree with Brigitte more on the exercise front – keep Sassy quiet. Muscle wasting is a side effect of the pred & sadly we can’t avoid it. Worzel was like a skeleton at one point – he even lost his head & jaw muscle tone – this is called pred head! They can damage ligaments, tendons, joints because of the lack of supporting muscle in the worst scenario. She needs loads of rest – a gentle, calm walk is fine though. Sorry – I should have said this yesterday too, Thanks Brigitte!
