Hi All,
I’m so pleased with where we’re at. Emily’s enjoying life and I’m able to breathe. The senior vet was gone and the other, younger vet doesn’t want to reduce until talking with her first. I’m supposed to call back on Monday.
So, I assumed we’d go from 7.5 to 5. Since her numbers seem so good maybe we should ease into it a bit more, like a couple of weeks at 6.25? Also, it’s been suggested that we could stop the Famotidine at this point. How do you feel about that?
Sheena, I considered what you said about the clotting issue and decided to forgo the test for that.
Thank you everyone.
Love, Susie and Emily ♡
Susie, I think the 5mg is okay. That’s a 33% reduction which is the top end of recommended. Then again, maybe do the 6.25 for a week or 10 days, then 5mg.
How decisive is that for you!!!
The famotide? Are you still using the sucralfate? See what the cleverererer ones say about that.
When you sort it out, let me know if you want a new chart.

Hi Vally,
Yes, I’m still giving her the Sucralfate (we’re down to twice a day).
I appreciate your opinion too! Being that you’ve struggled through those awful relapses with Bingo, you know from first-hand experience and so your opinion is very important to me. And a chart would be great if you don’t mind. Thanks!

I like Vally’s slightly slower reduction idea 100% – go for it, Susie!
The sucralfate is better than the famotidine in my personal opinion anyway – less side effects too, so I would just keep going with sucralfate twice daily (the most important dose is the very last thing at night) & drop the famotidine without worrying at all.
I don’t blame you for not wanting to know about the clotting risks now – it’s too late to think about it & Emily is doing fine. But I will always nag everyone with a newly diagnosed pet about this – it really is the most dangerous & serious risk with this disease in the early stages for most dogs – a sad fact.
Much love & huge hugs to you both

Thanks Sheena, I feel much better going slowly especially since her other blood work looked good so there isn’t as much urgency. I will keep you posted ;-)

Well, I would have liked to have enjoyed a worry-free weekend, but Emily thought that was just selfish of me, so, she managed to develop some diarrhea today. Do you think it could be the discontinuation of her Famotidine? This was the first day without it in three and a half months.
Well that was obviously very selfish of you. Can stopping it cause diarrhea? I’m not sure. Cut back on her food for a day, or if you can fast her even better – I never can fast Bingo though. I usually go with a smaller meal of cooked chicken breast and cooked sushi rice for a day or so and see how it goes.
Let us know how she goes.
