- Loose teeth
I noticed Bingo seemed to hit his mouth while playing and froze – this has happened before.
I checked in his mouth and noticed he has a loose tooth. Same on the other side. So at least 2.
I’m thinking I’ll go to the local vets tomorrow and get them to have a look, and I know they’ll say they’ll have to come out under anaesthetic. I’m going to ring the specialist on Monday and speak to him about it but I’m pretty sure they can’t stay in as it risks infection and more problems.
I’m scared of having him put under anaesthetic. Has anyone had this done?
Hi Vally
Poor old Bingo – in the wars again. Just wondering if this may be happening due to bone calcium deficiency induced by steroids – people certainly are prone to osteoporosis. Maybe you could ask about this, although they may not be able to do much about it. The trouble is that blood calcium levels tend to be high with steroids & a supplement of calcium might not be advisable because of this (risk of kidney stones etc). It’s worth asking though.
Worzel has a little benign growth on his anus which the vet & I decided to leave alone as I don’t want him to have another anaesthetic either! It’s that crazy paranoia again & I sympathise. Obviously, Worzel had to have anaesthetics for his bone marrow biopsies (first attempt was unsuccessful at local vets) when he was first ill, but it was done extremely quickly & they watched him like a hawk. The specialist reassured me that it was no big deal (ha ha) having to do it again & he was absolutely fine a couple of hours later each time. Trust me Vally, he really bounced back quickly, despite being unwell, and the types of anaesthetics available these days are very good. I bet someone else on here has had to get their AIHA dog anaesthetised too. Your vet & specialist sound great, so you know can trust them to give you the best advice. I think you’re right – those teeth will have to be removed, just in case.
Let us know how you get on as soon as you can – me & the boys will be thinking of you Bingo. Give him a big hug from his Auntie Sheena.
Hi Vally
Sorry to hear about Bingo’s teeth, poor thing. I don’t know much about dogs, but Molly had 3 general anesthetics and 3 sedations and came out of them just fine. The last general anesthetic was when she was very poorly with AIHA (for her bone marrow biopsy). She was given Oxyglobin the night before but she had no problems with the anesthesia. They are generally very safe these days and the veterinary anesthetists are highly trained. But I do know how scary it is! I hope all goes well, do let us know how he gets on.

Dunes did have a tooth cleaning and did well and she was never off of meds. She did well mo problems at all.
Ask the vet first. I was very apprensive on cleaning her teeth but she did very well.
Thanks all. I didn’t go to the local vets yesterday. I though I’d rather speak to the specialist first, especially bearing in mind the seizure 5 weeks ago (nothing since on that thank goodness). I rang this morning and he’s on leave this week (aint it always the way!). So I’ve left a message for one of the other specialists that knows Bingo to ring me. As Bingo is due to see his specialist next Monday, I may just check it’s okay to delay things until I see him first and maybe have the teeth dealt with after that.
It’s certainly not affecting his eating and he doesn’t show any tenderness. I’m just more nervous in giving him hard items – his favourite treat is dried chicken necks which are pretty hard – he’ll dance for these. I might use a nut cracker on them before giving them to him just so he doesn’t have to do the initial break through them.
Worry worry worry worry.
One of the specialists rang and said not to do anything until I bring Bingo in next week and see his specialist if it’s not bothering him, and it’s not. I much prefer that. If they’ll deal with it there I’d be even happier but I doubt they will (it would also cost heaps more there, however I’d feel safer – I mean Bingo would feel safer). However, I’m pretty sure they’ll send me to the local vets for this.
Bingo is just a lot more comfortable there – having spent a GREAT deal of time there. He only hides under the chair whilst there and needs to be dragged out – at the local vets, he’s under the chair shaking and looking terrified until dragged out.
I’ll let you all know what happens next week.
Love Vally
