- Polyarthritis back?
Well it’s almost 5 in the morning now and Bingo woke me with a scream about an hour ago.
I’ve no idea what happened.
He was all stretched out and stiff and crying loudly. He had also wet himself.
I patted him and he calmed and quietened.
<span style=”line-height: 1.428571429;”>I checked his gums and they had good colour.</span>
Whilst he seemed able to move, he seemed reluctant to. I carried him outside and he walked about a bit and when I called him him, he came in without any apparent difficulty.
I just thought to check his temperature – that’s fine 37.2 C.
When I went to get the thermometer, I came back in and found him trying to bury the computer. He doesn’t like the computer or my ebook on the bed. Always tries to toss them off the bed or bury them in the bed coverings.
He’s now sleeping and fine. In fact while I’m typing, he’s just heard something and went into “dog alert” mode. All safe and snoozing again.
I’ll ring the vets at a reasonable hour – it is an emergency clinic but his vet isn’t one of the emergency vets so he won’t be there now. He’s usually in on Mondays, and I’d rather see him, but it’s a public holiday today so I’m not sure.
I’m guessing the rheumatoid arthritis is showing itself again. He may have gone to change positions and had pain.
After all the heat, yesterday was quite cool. Maybe the cold has triggered it?
My teeth are still clenched from the scare and he’s now sleeping comfortably. Actually he’s a bit twitchy.
I’ll let you know what happens.

Vally, I am so sorry for that scare. What is going on with that little guy? Bumps on the skin, crying at night? I am assuming the bumps are a side effect of the drugs. But the waking and crying at night is a bit scary. Sorry I have no idea what it could have been. If it happens again can you film it, maybe with your phone. I remember my vet telling me that once. They can get a better idea of what they are dealing with. And of course when our dogs are in a state like that we can think of nothing but how to get it on camera….. Was ist similar to the earlier incident where you thought he hit his head on the stairs? i hope it wont happen again and it was just a fluke!
Best wishes,
Brigitte
Hi Brigitte. He’s absolutely fine this morning. Eating, drinking, pooing, we’ve gone for a walk and he was fine.
I put a call in to the specialists but my guy isn’t there today – it’s a holiday here so they’re only operating on an emergency basis, but they’re going to have one of the vets there ring me back this morning after rounds to go through it.
I’ll make an appointment when I speak to the vet to see Bingo’s vet on Wednesday when he’s in. His vet is also in tomorrow but I’m supposed to be working tomorrow. Obviously if something happens before Wednesday, then I’ll just take him to emergency.
Yes it worries me that there have been a few little different incidents.

Hi Vally
Sorry to hear this – do you think he went unconscious at all? As Brigitte says, was it like the steps episode? Filming it is a great idea if it happens again, heaven forbid. I don’t know what it could be either, apart from hurting himself by moving – did he flail his legs around at all? I know you would have said if he had a history of epilepsy or anything. If his temperature seems fine, that should theoretically rule out infection, although his ear pimple problem may be something? I know being too hot can cause seizures though & you’ve had some very hot weather over there.
Bingo – stop worrying your Mum & have a good sleep.
Let us know how he is as soon as you can – I will be thinking about you both, you can count on that.

I really doubt I could film it. It’s too distressing.
Dr Google is suggesting it may have been a seizure. I would never have thought a dog screaming and seizure went together, but it says they can moan or scream involuntarily. The stiffening up and urinating goes with it too.
He did have a couple of slight seizures years ago. He would fall over and stiffen up. No screaming. That was one of the reasons I started looking into titer tests instead of vaccinations.
I haven’t heard back from the vets yet. They are aware he’s fine this morning. Why do things happen on long weekends???
This is very much the same thing that happened about a year ago, in the middle of the night as well. Only difference was he had had his prednisone lowered at that time too but was having more and more trouble walking. His pred dose was put back up and no more symptoms.
That’s what made me think this time it could be the arthritis back again, but he hasn’t shown any symptom of joint pain this time round.
Middle of the night, long weekend, thanks Bingo.
The emergency vet rang this afternoon. I mentioned I thought it sounded like a seizure to me and he agrees it may have been. Perhaps a mild one as he was didn’t seem to be unconscious and there doesn’t seem to be any after effects.
As Bingo has been fine since then, they suggest just keep an eye on him. There’s no need to go down just yet. I’m okay with that as he has been fine all day.
I’ll probably be nervous tonight and most likely will be prodding him during the night.
Fingers crossed no more episodes.
Hear that Bingo???

Hi Vally
Glad he’s been fine since – what a worry for you though. I didn’t realise he’d had a problem before, so atonic seizure is maybe a possibility then. No good sleeps for you for a while – Hey Ho AIHA is sent to try us.
Bingo – listen to your Aunty Sheena – don’t you dare have any more little episodes, OK?
