I use a product the vet gave me called Wound Gard Antiseptic and Bitterant Spray which worked well on Bingo’s leg where the drip had been. It also wouldn’t heal, but also because Bingo wouldn’t leave it alone. I’m not sure if it was because Bingo wouldn’t leave it and the bitterant in the spray stopped him licking it that the wound finally started to heal, or whether the product helped heal the sore. After having paid heaps for it at the vets, of course I’ve since bought it on line at a quarter of the price. I tend to use it for any sort of sores that come up.
Perhaps some good old salt water?
The pill cutter – no such thing as a good one for that size. I cut Bingo’s pred into eighths. Most times, I’ll cut the quarter piece in half and have to toss out one of the halves because it’s crushed. I like Sheena’s idea but check it’s soluble.

Linda, I have your email, don’t ever worry about that.
Touch wood, no sign of any drunken behaviour from Bingo since the last time. He’s been barking as usual at meal times and I’m just a little less stressed about it since nothing has happened (in that regard).
I know I should probably take the collar off, certainly at home, but that collar is actually yet another supplement – yes, it’s a magnetic collar which is supposed to help with arthritis. Does it help? Who knows but do I risk taking it off – ummmmm I don’t know. If he has more dizzy spells, then yes I’ll probably try taking it off, but it is fairly loose. The only reason I suddenly noticed it was tighter was because it had a longer tail at the end. I don’t know when it was tightened. If it was tightened at the vets after his blood test, that doesn’t explain the first episode which was a week before that. I had washed him a few weeks before but I can’t believe I would not have noticed it in that time, but maybe I did.
I’m not sure about elevating the bowl because he’s so short (shhhh).
Microchipping here is actually compulsory. Also because he was a rescue, he came to me all chipped up. The chipping is imposed here because that’s how rangers can catch you out if you’re in an on-leash park with a dog off lease – they carry around little scanners.
I’d like to upload a video of Bingo last night with him wrestling with his blanket. Dragging it everywhere. Getting his ball to play with. I videoed it because he could only manage to drag himself to food yesterday morning. By lunch time, there were still signs of a limp on that front leg but when he started walking it all disappeared. We went for a walk in the afternoon and there were no signs of anything – my nephew saw him at that point (not knowing about the morning at the vets) and said “Gee, he looks good! – grrrrrrrr. Of course it could have been the extra pred which kicked in and left him feeling happy again.
I kept covering him with his blanket last night – he kept coming out of it – we both persisted – in – out – in – out. This morning I massaged him all over which he loved. He doesn’t like to get out of bed in the mornings (it’s winter here and the nights are cold – probably not cold like your cold, but cold). He just lays there waving his arm for me to keep rubbing and massaging. I was really scared to put him on the floor, but he was fine, stretched out everything and then trotted into the kitchen, ready for FOOOOOOD.
I’ll stick with the last dose that he was on for about a month that was working for a while before trying to drop down to every second day (sort of) again.
Love Vally & happy.
Linda, yes the prednisone does quite a job in masking arthritis and, worse, doing more damage unfortunately, but we wouldn’t have our friends with us today without it. So one thing at a time.
I suspect Bingo’s vet is going to call over yesterday’s adventures and I’ll mention to him about the cartrophen, but he had previously recommended it for Bingo BUT I thought it was only for osteo, not rheumatoid. Vet yesterday said both, so I want to check that with him. It’s actually not expensive at all here. I had to pay for the whole course up front (and could have taken it home with me to inject at home but I can’t inject Bingo). Here it’s a course of 4 injections, 1 a week, once a year – although last time I took Bingo in, they suggested after the initial course, do it once a month as he was a bit of a mess then. It has a very good safety record. Because I didn’t ask for a copy of the bill because my dear fur friend has used up all his insurance for his arthritis, I can’t check, but I think it was about $25 per injection and they don’t charge for the returning visits.
It’s terribly to see them in pain. Speak to your vet about green lipped mussels and gelatin, even turmeric to check they’re okay. Only issues with all of these could be gastric and I know Sadie has a sensitive tummy. I’m fortunate in that Bingo seems to have a cast iron stomach. (Ollie said the gelatin tastes like poison, but how would he know what poison tastes like – Bingo said “what gelatin”). But maybe smaller amounts might help without causing more upsets. Vet yesterday said because they’re on prednisone, there isn’t much to do for pain other than pain killers (not NSAIDs obviously) , the injections or supplements. He told me to up the dosage of the GLM back to 1000 a day for Bingo. He’s also a big fan of turmeric, (he’s researched it treating tumours), but said stick with it for the arthritis and hey, it will hopefully prevent any tumours – I like that idea too.
I agree, though wait until you’ve back.
Lots of love Vally & Bingo.
Ashki, sticking your nose where it’s not wanted is not good.
A PCV of 26 is very good though.
Tamara, does Ashki get any fish oil? I’ve read that it could help with kidney issues, but please check first if you’re not already using it. It’s fish body oil, not liver oil.
Regards, Vally & Bingo
Oh I’m all for letting him get out for a bit. Don’t let him overdo it that’s all. Start out with smaller walks and see how he goes. I think let him enjoy himself.
I have a park across the road from me. When Bingo was starting to get better, I used to carry him over, let him wander around and chat with the other dogs, then I’d carry him home. A few people over that time asked me if the Park Ranger was about because at that stage, it was a leash-on park and you’d be fined for having a dog off leash and they were pretty ruthless (meanies!). No, I’d say, he’s been pretty sick and I don’t want him tired out. Bingo just put up with me making him look stupid :)
