Hope, I’m thinking Steve has gulped his food down too quickly. Bingo is a lazy eater and never does the 10 chews before swallowing. To stop him chocking on chicken necks or large pieces of food, I now cut up all his food – to his horror because it means he now has to WAIT while I cut. Before that, he would vomit up whole pieces of whatever.
Also with the pred reduction, I pretty much always found that the PCV would slip back a bit before it started moving back up again. Almost as though the body needs to adapt to the lower dose.

Rick, I’ve got several interactions coming up with the drugs too – these are people interactions but can anyone help with this:
Prednisolone – with food – DO NOT take with Cyclosporine (increases level/effect pred), Plavix (pred increases level/effect of Plavix) or Sulcrate. Can be taken with Metoclopramide and Omeprazole.
Cyclosporine – without food – DO NOT take with any of the other drugs. Omeprazole decreases level/effect of cyclosporine. Cyclo increases level/effect of pred. Cyclo decreases level/effect of Plavix. Metoclopramide increases levels/effect of cyclo.
Plavix – can be taken with metoclopramide. DO NOT take with the others.
Sucralfate – DO NOT take with any of the drugs as it stops absorption.
I know it’s really hard to juggle all these medicines. I’m thinking something along the lines of:
6am – Cyclosporine
7am – Prednisolone, Metoclorapramide, Omeprazole (with food)
9am – Sucralfate (if doing twice a day)
5pm – Plavix
6pm – Prednisolone (with food)
8pm – Cyclosporine
10pm – Sucralfate
Can anyone see a problem? This is, of course, assuming you can do those sorts of times – workwise etc.
Regards, Vally
Yay she’s home.
As you’ve done, keep exercise to an absolute minimum for now. She won’t have much energy. It’s great she wants to go for a walk though. I also found the pred itself used to knock Bingo out a lot. As he moved to lower doses, there was a very visible difference.
I’ve always given prednisolone with food and Cyclosporine away from food. I was told to give cyclo at least an hour away from food. Some dog’s don’t tolerate it without food though. What has the vet suggested? As Sheena said, if you’re giving with food, stick to giving it with food, if without, stick to without.
I like the idea of continuing the sulcrate. It also helps to protect the stomach. Really important to keep this away from all meds though, as it stops the absorption of them. Bingo ended up with ulcers from the pred. He was then put on sucralfate (which I think is the same) and it worked brilliantly. We only stopped using it when he got down to much smaller doses of pred.
It’s probably a good idea to post the times of the dosing of the drugs here. That way if anyone spots a problem, they can let you know.
Send me an email and I’ll get a chart back to you. Let me know when you send an email and I’ll take my email off from this note.

Hi Rick, I can’t wait to hear that Brandy is home. Whilst it’s scary when they get home, I think it’s so much better for them and us. You’ve got a lot to read and take in above, so I won’t add anything.
If you don’t have a pill chart, please let me know and I’d love to make one up for you.
Actually Sheena you mentioned a CBC every 3 days. We used to do a PCV every 3 days, not complete blood works. Were you doing complete?

They do look high BUT, whilst on high dose prednisone, they will be high. I can’t remember is Steve on something for his liver? SAMe or milk thistle?
Bingo’s went on Denosyl (SAMe) to help when his results went too high and that did work quite quickly. His vet wasn’t worried about it because there was no doubt it was being caused by the prednisone and as it’s reduced the liver will recover.
