- Seeking transfusion advice and general input.
Sorry – forgot to say about the thyroxine. Benni needs it anyway, as he’s borderline hypo. Hypothyroidism is a cause of anaemia. Regardless of being hypothyroid or not, Dr Dodds always recommends thyroxine because of it’s ability to stimulate blood cell production. So it’s a no brainer for Benni.

Hi Allison, sorry I’ve only just seen your post.
The ladies on here are amazing and are a lifeline to all of us, believe me Sheena and the gang have kept me sane during my Louis’s journey.
I totally understand where you are coming from with watching their breathing, Louis use to puff his cheeks out alot and his heart rate when high, even when he was laid next to us doing nothing. It’s easy now for me to say don’t focus all your engery on that because it will drive you nuts.
Louis has had 6 blood transfusions since Feb 10th so don’t be afraid of them, they are a lifeline. Every dog has their own tolerance levels before they need a transfusion, Louis’s PCV dropped to 10% and he’s a big dobermann, he could hold his own at 15%.
He is a slight mystery and has had Sheena scratching her head, but it doesn’t help when our UK vets don’t give your blood results.
You have everyone’s support on here, and there are no stupid questions, believe me I will have asked them. But please don’t give up hope, we all know exactly how you are feeling, and how exhausting it is to have a dog with this terrible condition, but they can and do recover it just takes time.
You will become a PCV junkie like the rest of us, and Bennington will get fed up of you always having your fingers in is mouth checking his chops, but with the right treatment and a willing vet you will both come out the other side of what feels like a very dark tunnel.
Lots of love Karyn, Louis and Olga xxx
Hi Allison
Worried as we hadn’t heard back from you after the vet visit – is everything OK?
