- Nula (5yr old English Cocker Spaniel)
Thank you Linda and Sheena!! And thank you for those links!! Just got off the phone to the vets. She’s doing well! They gave her more blood yesterday than normal and it’s given her a good boost. Her vet said it’s the brightest she’s seen Nula since she was admitted! And I can go visit tomorrow at 3pm! I can’t wait!! Missing her so much! They’ll call back some time this evening with her PCV results but they’re expecting them to be ‘ok’. She’s still not eating and that’s worrying them quite a bit. But they’re hoping to get her to take something through a syringe today as she’s a bit brighter. If not, they’re hoping she’ll eat for me tomorrow. So until this evening, we’re back to no news is good news. So feeling more positive today. xxxxxx
Ruth, that is the greatest news. Happy Monday Nula!!! I can not wait to hear about her PCV and how she’s doing for the remainder of the day. As always, let us know.
We are so very happy to read this this morning!!! Oh, and please excuse ALL the typos on my last post. I tried to post without my (reading) glasses and that iPhone print is very small. Da. But it was heart felt and I wanted you to know Nula was on my mind, as she is so much though this stabilizing time.
Love and hugs, Linda and Sadie
Hi Ruth
This is really excellent news! In my experience, my dogs never wanted to eat at the vets, full stop. The syringe might be the only way for now. I know that’s a bit worrying, but I can assure you the steroids will give her a BIG appetite when they start to do their work. I can imagine you taking various tasty options for her to try tomorrow & seeing you will make the world of difference. To hear she is more stable has cheered me up no end – please let us know how she’s doing.
To Nula – a big whooppeeeeee from all of us & a cuddle too

Hi Ruth
Wonderful to hear how much better Nula is doing. And what a beautiful girl she is – I love her photo.
Have a lovely time visiting her tomorrow, and I hope she eats for you (but please don’t worry too much if she doesn’t). Lots and lots of cuddles and love!
Do let us know how you get on, when you can. We are all thinking of you and Nula so much. Give her cuddles from us!

Thank you all for your posts! Feeling rather rubbish this evening :( Bad news really tonight. Her PCV level is 18 which is quite a bit lower than they expected. They were hoping it would be about 22-25 after so much blood yesterday. It’s not terrible given she’s been as low as 10, but worried she’s destroyed so much so quickly. Clinically she’s doing ok, her breathing and heart rate have stayed normal. I’ve given permission for a 3rd transfusion if she needs it in the night. They’ll ring in the morning to let me know if I can still visit because if she is on a transfusion again they’ll have to cancel again :( But they have gotten her to take some food through syringe feeding, and so far she’s kept it down. So until tomorrow, no news is good news and fingers crossed she stays stable overnight. Xxxxxxx
Hi Ruth
There are three very positive things I’ve just read in your message –
1. PCV of 18 is a damn sight better than 10. Worzel “managed” sufficiently at 16-18 for quite a long time, but he was exhausted. The dexamethasone has only just been started – although it is stronger than prednisolone, it still takes a little while to work. I wish all these drugs worked instantly, but they don’t.
2. Keeping her food down – my goodness that is a big step forward.
3. Heart & breathing rate normal – great! – it means she’s not as distressed as she was & is now getting some oxygen round her body.
Hoping for some positive news in the morning for you on the PCV. Some dogs need a lot of transfusions before they really perk up. Keep on fighting – Nula can beat this.
Love from us all, Sheena & The Boys
Thank you Sheena – said so perfectly.
Ruth, Nula is moving forward, that’s the main thing. Small, baby steps. The news may have not been as good as they wanted it to be, but still good!
And yes, this roller coaster is beating you up, but you will stay strong – you will. You are Nula’s strength. Stand fast. And when you see her, when ever that may be, stand tall and confident – she’ll see that in you.
I never had to leave Sadie, but everyone here knows I was delirious with the ups and downs and shed many tears. Although, most here did have to leave their precious pups and went through what you’re going through. So, when they tell you, it takes time and/or anything else positive, they’re not just telling you to make you feel better – they’ve lived it and all the angst that comes with it and they know – Nula can make it too.
In time to come, you’ll be advising others – encouraging others – helping others. I know this is easier said than done, but try to be strong and be patient.
Sending love and hugs, Linda
