- Louie’s constipation?
Hello! My sweet Louie (Boston Terrier, 8 yrs) was diagnosed with IMHA on May 19 and has been on 20 mg prednisone/day and 25mg immuran. His RBC was 11% yesterday but finally we see red blood cells being produced! He is perking up a bit and eating a little and drinking but hasn’t pooped for maybe 5 days. Can you give any advice for me with this?
Hi Leah, and welcome to the forum. I’m going to change your heading as it wasn’t letting me in. The AIHA beginning is opening the glossary item.
If Louie isn’t eating much, that’s most likely the reason. There’s not much to poop. What is Louie eating? Definitely add some pumpkin. It’s the best for both constipation and for diarrhoea. If you’re in the US, you can buy canned pumpkin and use that. Just make sure the ingredients are just pumpkin – NOT the pie pumpkin variety. Otherwise you can just boil or steam some pumpkin and add a little to Louie’s food.
Do you have a copy of Louie’s blood results? If you do, attach them to the Urgent Advice at the top. Patrice can check them for you and explain what she sees there.
Ask anything at all Leah, we’d love to help.
My best,
Vally, angel Bingo and Saba (the new horror in my life)
Leah,
I’m sorry, there was a problem with your post in the forum and no one could get into your topic to reply to you, that’s fixed now! I hope you are still with us?
I would love an update to his condition and if you could send me the most recent CBC and chem screen I can help you understand what they are telling us. You can attach files to send to us on the Urgent Advice page, you can see that on the menu items at the top of the page. Far right side.
Sometimes if dogs have had any kind of anesthesia, and he might have had it for laboratory testing, it can take days for a bowel movement. As Vally says we always recommend plain canned pumpkin for both diarrhea and constipation. If you can’t find it at this time of the year, any yellow winter squash will work, like acorn or butternut. I think that stores stock squash in frozen boxes still? For your dog try about 1-2 tbls per day.
A PCV HCT of 11% is quite low and I would want to know that he has risen above this by now. Please let me know what this value is now?
my best,
patrice
