- Azathioprine Reduction
Hi everyone
Can any of you who have had your dog treated with azathioprine for this disease tell us exactly how you weaned your dog please? Also, tell us about any problems you had during weaning.
Thank you
Sheena xxxx
What we did with Worzel, bearing in mind he had bone marrow failure: slowly!
After stopping the prednisolone completely:
Month 1 – 1 x 50mg every other day
Month 2 – 1 x 50mg every 3 days
Month 3 – 1 x 50mg every 4 days
Month 4 – 1 x 50mg every 5 days
Month 5 – 1 x 50mg every 6 days
Month 6 – 1x 50mg every 7 days
I’ve never had the guts to stop it because of his age. Specialist is fine with that, but says it’s probably doing nothing much. It’s my insurance policy & I am probably being over-cautious.
Jill – I personally think a quicker reduction should be fine for Snoopy – say drop every 2 weeks. There is no set protocol on how to do this.
If any one else has other opinions or ideas, please chip in!

Thankyou Sheen, the every 2 weeks drop sounds good to me, Snoopy has to finish the predisilone first, but as you know my vet wants me to discontue the Azthioprine when I have run out of them? without any weaning? I just wanted to know if anyone elses has had same experience and how there doggie was weaned off the Azthioprine to? thanking you all love Jill & Snoopy xxxx
