Hemolysis is the rupturing of RBC (erythrocytes) releasing their contents into surrounding blood plasma. Hemolysis may occur inside or outside the body. There can be many causes for hemolysis in the body. In AIHA /IMHA the cause is an autoimmune attack on the RBC, mistaking them for “not self” invaders.
