- Sadie -Atopica weaning
Hi all. I really want to get Sadie off the Atopica. She is down to 10mg every third (3) day. When I give it, she often has a very loose stool. She had her third day dose today.
She is still getting 6mg Prednisone, 5mg AM and 1mg PM.
Her hind legs are really shaking, most all the time. She got a haircut on Wednesday and her little hind legs just quivered. She is not scared of the clippers – she’s use to them – just lies down (making it hard for fur mom here to do a good job – that’s the excuse I use…hmmm) but the minute I get her to stand (again), her hind legs quiver, as is going outside to do her business and just generally standing.
I know I need to get her to as low a dose as possible with the Prednisone, but I think for Sadie, the Atopica is just as harmful (good harmful, but at this point – harmful).
Those of you that have used Atopica, do you think I could stop it or should I move it to every four (4) days, then five (5) and so on? I mean would it do harm to just stop if it’s only 10mg every three days? It’s been over a year…..
As always – thanks. Other than that – she’s great – pink tongue. :) :)
Love and hugs to all, Linda and shaky Sadie
So, do you think I can just STOP the every 3rd day 10mg daily (one) Atopica, period – zero Atopica? She’ll still have the 6mg pred daily. The Atopica is getting to her…….I know it is.
Love and hugs, Linda
Hi Linda,
sorry I just saw this right now, for some reason I don’t get the e mails any more. I am not an expert with Atopica at all, I know Patrice has used it with Chance and knows quite a bit about it. I know it saved Chances life. As far as I know she did “pulse dosing”. Chance got it during the week but not on the weekend. This was recommended by Dr. Dodds. I also know that they can do a blood test to find out if your dog is on the right dose. Has that ever been done? Sorry I don’t have a definite answer to your question. maybe contact Dr. Dodds on this?
Best wishes,
Brigitte
Thanks Mary and Brigitte. No, Mary, 10mg is the lowest dose. And it’s a liquid capsule, so it can not be divided.
Brigitte, Sadie has been getting the one dose, 10mg, every three (3) days, in the morning. Every time I give it to her, she has issues.
Like I said, we are down to 6mg of prednisone a day (down from 40mg daily) and we have done this very, very slowly.
Sadie’s PCV has held great and except for the ‘pollen’ bout – all other blood work seems okay, within normal limits.
I have to be very careful not to alter her food regiment, as her tummy can not handle any changes right now. Consequently, we keep it pretty hum-drum, but it works. She gets her certain foods, certain treats (only three store bought and slightly steamed organic baby carrots and kale in her food). That’s it, except for the Pepcid, anti-blood clot med (Clopidogrel, generic human Plavix), PetTinic, slippery elm, milk thistle and CellFood SAM-e (supplements).
I guess what I’m asking is, can I discontinue the Atopica (altogether) without hurting her? We’re down to such a low dose and have been at this dose (10mg daily) for almost 2 months. Of course, I’d continue the pred and I already know Sadie will most likely be on some sort of maintenance dose for her life, or for a good while, at least.
Maybe Patrice will respond or some else will that has discontinued Atopica. I hate to bother Dr. Dodds with this. When I was talking and e-mailing with Dr. Dodds before, her condition was critical. We’re not critical now and I don’t want to bother her. I just know Sadie and I can tell a difference when she gets even this low dose of Atopica lately. It’s been over a year with no break – just too long.
Thanks for your posts. Hope you all are okay with your fur babies. Although, I know we’re all heart broken about Mattie……tear.
Love and hugs, Linda and Sadie
Hi Linda,
Hmmm… what does your vet say? I don’t see a problem contacting Dr. Dodds about this, especially since you have spoken to her before. She would probably be happy to hear Sadie is doing pretty good. I think it would be ok to stop the Atopica all together, but like I said before I am absolutely no expert on it. I know it is the holidays and you can not contact your vet unless it is an emergency but come Tuesday you could call her/him and get some input.
Best wishes,
Brigitte
Thanks Brigitte. I can certainly get through the weekend without bothering Dr. Dodds. I wrote Callie on FB and then did a single post on FB. Also, Patrice might see this post – it can wait.
My vet is open, that’s not the problem. It just that with the vet’s office, when I ask questions, it’s almost me that helps them come up with the answer. They actually know and promote that our forum is here and helping so much. And though, let me add, they have been awesome. The problem too, is that my original vet has left (he now does 98% rescue work) and a good ways from us. But I could e-mail him too – awe – there’s a thought.
Thanks – will get through the weekend. I just thought someone MIGHT see this and have a quick answer. No problem. Sadie’s snoring right now (it’s very late here….), and all four paws are in the air -she’s good. :)
Happy Easter!!! Love and hugs,
Linda and noisy, lazy Sadie
Hi Linda
There’s no easy answer. I am not personally experienced with atopica either, but it obviously upsets her tummy so I can understand why you want to cut it out. I still think the pred is more of a problem with the weakness side of things though & hope you can continue cut it down (I know – slowly!) I can’t tell you how much the sudden difference in Worzel was when we got him onto a very small dose & eventually off the pred, but I know the relapse word is in the back of your mind too. I think Brigitte is right – ask Dr Dodds – I bet she wouldn’t mind at all.
