- Urynalysis vrs. Urine Culture
Hi Tara. Bless you and Diablo’s heart. But it does sound better – and sounds as if the antibiotics are working. Thank goodness.
I went through some of this with Sadie too, off and on, not tee-teeing blood, but blood in urine. We did the urinalysis and cultures too (they actually did a needle culture) and was put on antibiotics, Which cleared all up. This was also about the time that her muscle atrophy was so bad that I couldn’t leave her for more than two hours at a time without an ‘accident’ – I felt so badly for her. She has always been so good about going for almost the entire day, but just could not hold it with the still massive amounts of water she was taking in – what goes in, must come out right?! She would always hang her head, as if she was ashamed. I was never angry with her and we’d mop and sterilize the tile. I’d hug her and let her know we’d get through it – it will be okay. And we have. I think with the weaning of meds, she’s almost back to normal on that front.
This has been such a long road for you, with many ups and downs. You are an incredible ‘mom’ and your diligence is amazing. I know too, that the financial burden great. Here’s hoping all will level now with the antibiotics.
What dose of meds is Diablo on now? Like I said, since weaning of Prednisone and cyclosporine, Sadie is doing much better. Darn good/bad meds!!
Love and huge hugs to you both,
Linda and Sadie
Hi Tara
Just a quick note to say that when we adopted Worzel or Sick Note as he’s affectionately known as in our house!), he had a chronic bladder infection that we didn’t know about. I thought he was just being difficult to house train for the first couple of months – until he peed all over my BED & then in his own bed, then I thought, no, there’s a problem. Dogs don’t do that in their own beds. Our lovely vet agreed – no dog will pee in the bed they have to sleep in deliberately – took a sample (but NO culture) & also did a bladder scan. He had a sausage shaped bladder (he would, wouldn’t he?) which we thought could have been the cause of incontinence. He was also on antibiotics for 2 weeks (as there was a trace of blood on the dipstick) but the infection came straight back, so a different antibiotic for another 8 weeks after the culture result. Hence, better to do a culture! He has been costing us lots of money ever since we adopted him, but that’s life with pets & we love him dearly. Sounds like those antibiotics are doing their job – great news, Tara!
Love from all of us to you & Diablo

Hello, just got Diablo’s culture results….the bacteria was ecoli. They want him on antibiotics for at least 4 weeks and than another culture to see if he is clear…they are pretty sure it is up in his kidney. Do you think treatment should be longer? He is on clavimox and they are keeping him on that….he is doing well on antibiotics and no more blood!!
Hi Tara, glad there’s a diagnosis to deal with, at least they now know what they’re fighting. I guess if they are going to test after the 4 weeks to check he’s clear, that should be a safeguard. Someone probably knows more about it.
I’m thrilled your level-headed little devil is doing better though.
Have we seen a photo of Diablo???
Hi Tara
E Coli is a common one from poo. Sorry to be crude, but he may have licked his bottom, then his old be joyful (willie winkie) & transferred the infection like that. As Vally says, as long as he is culture checked towards the end of the 4 weeks, that should be fine, although it does say 4-6 weeks in difficult cases.
I found this for you
