- Shih Tzu Diagnosed With AIHA
Well, I’m disappointed that Emily is only up to a 38. I know it’s up, but I was hoping for the 40’s. Should I be concerned? Her protein is a 7.
Hiya Susie
You should be very happy! 38 is normal – some dogs who have never had AIHA will have a normal PCV lower than that, or the same – 35 is the lowest “normal”. If you don’t know what her PCV was before the illness, it’s hard to say what her “personal normal” level should be for certain. It might well go up in the future, but you have every reason to be happy. The protein level of 7 is within normal parameters for this test result to be accurate too (6.5-8.0). Congratulations, Susie & dear Emily

Susie, yes very happy. Bingo’s PCV sat on about the 35 mark for a long time, up a little down a little. We came to the conclusion that that was his new normal, and as Sheena said who knows what it was before he become sick.
No, really, that’s a great result.

You girls are awesome encouragers :) I’m so glad we’ve met you! The tech at the vets today thought she may need to see a specialist. Thank you…again and again!

Good afternoon, or morning or evening, depending on who’s reading this 😉
Emily and her mom had an awful night! Her diarrhea was so bad. She’s spending the day at the vets having a BUNCH of tests run! Her stool came back as negative which is good, but the dr was disappointed because it’s making her job harder as far as a diagnoses of what’s causing the pancreas issues and diarrhea. Also, no fever.
She’s cutting her Prednisone to 7.5 once daily. We may switch to Cyclosprine depending on what the tests show today.
For those of you who believe, could you say a prayer for our little girl?
Big thanks and much love❤️
Emily’s mom
Oh Susie,
I’m so sorry this diarrhoea is carrying on – the vets is absolutely the right place for a dog with suspected pancreatitis. Cyclosporine is much safer than azathioprine for the pancreas, so I’m glad they are looking at changing that too. We have had a few people whose dogs have has pancreatitis, probably because of the azathioprine, coupled with the pred. It does tend to be the little ones who don’t tolerate it so well.
Please let us know how she is doing – we are ALL willing with all our hearts for Susie to get through this & are behind you every minute of the day.
Much love & the biggest hug possible – plus a gentle cuddle for sweet Emily,
Sheena xxxxx
Sheena,
You must have been replying as I was on the phone with the dr.
Emily is ready to come home in about an hour. They’re getting her something for diarrhea and completely stopping Azathioprine and starting Cyclosprine. No other drugs for today as she is getting some of them injected by dr. Her ultrasound showed that the pancreas is indeed inflamed and when I pick her up I will try to remember to get copy of new pancreas blood test for you.
I need a new nickname of Emily. Maybe, Billion Dollar Dog, eh?
Much love, Susie
