- Sadie – PCV drop or ?
Thanks Vally and Sheena. I know what you’re saying and 90% agrees. And from what you both are saying, it may be near time to decrease or eliminate both the Clopidogrel and Plavix.
Vally, I can just see Bingo crawling under the chair and you ever so gently (through grinding teeth) pulling him out. Yes, I do believe that he and Sadie have been communicating. But what is Viber?
The Sucralfate here is in pill form, so I just put it in a very nasty smelling pill pocket (duck) and she of course, devours it. But I stopped giving the Sucralfate long ago. It’s an awesome drug, but Dr. Hamilton, before he left, said to start her on a 1/2 tab of over the counter Pepcid. She is on that to this day, 1/2 tab daily, in the afternoon. That’s all. Maybe it’s not enough, but when she was on the the three pills of Sucralfate daily, she smacked her lips still.
I gave her Cerenia last night and that helped. She’s not smacking her lips today. Funny how Cerenia is promoted to deal with motion sickness and it has been found to help so much with their tummies. I always have it on hand. Expensive though.
She get’s her heartworm pill today, which last time gave her diarrhea too. Here we go again. I give her heart worm tab every 45 days, as Dr. Dodds recommended, instead of every 30 days, as the manufacturer recommends. Let’s see – whom do we trust, Dr. Dodds or manufacturer. ;)
I know what you’re saying about waiting to come back. I am afraid to do ANYTHING different before I leave. It’s just that she gets such an upset tummy when I give the Atopica. And a few weeks ago, her vet said that it’s not enough to really hold anything together, as what she’s doing with the prednisone alone is in line, for her weight, with what her adrenal glands would produce on their own.
I missed her vet’s call last night, so I will wait until Monday, as she’s off until then. It’s no big deal, the call, because her next Atopica dose is not until Wednesday, the 18th. It’s just that it’s the Atopica that has bothered her and I think it’s because she’s been on it for so long, over a year. She’s shaking on her hind legs too, on the days I give it to her – I didn’t mention that before. So, it’s diarrhea and shaking. Then she regains her tummy and stops shaking and it’s time for the next Atopica dose, and it all starts over again for 24 hours. Goodness.
Yes Sheena, Sadie is on Clopidogrel (Plavix). She’s been on it since the very beginning (well, when you all insisted I insist with her vet!!! Thank you SO much for that!!!).
I’ll also talk with her about the over-the-counter Pepcid. It’s not a huge dose and I have wondered if I should be giving her a full pill (10 mg, instead of half, 5mg) daily. But it was what was prescribed, when we stopped the Sucralfate, so I have stuck with it. Just weird, that she hasn’t addressed it, nor have I thought about it until now, with Sadie being down to 5mg of prednisone a day (plus the every 5 days, 10mg Atopica).
Yes, her platelets were elevated. She’s good now though. With her latest two CBC’s – Dr. Reyes blames most of her elevations, if any, on the meds. And they have come within normal range since weaning. Even her cholesterol has come way down (I know it’s not the same as with humans, but at first I was concerned about that too).
What a yo-yo!! Tis always something, yes it tis. I will keep you all posted and so appreciate your input. What on this sweet earth would I do without you all, my dear friends.
Love and huge hugs, Linda & Sadie
Hi Linda
I’m sorry I’ve been offline for a few days but glad Sadie had a great birthday, and am even more pleased to read the great news about her latest PCV.
Just a thought – is it possible to reduce the Atopica to 5mg once a week? I’m not sure what the preparation is, but I’m kinda in agreement with the others about not changing anything before your trip otherwise you will worry about her.
Many moons ago now, I went to Australia. My Dad was very ill at the time and I was very reluctant to go. Anyway, long story short, but I always remember someone telling me you could get anywhere within 24 hours. I know you will worry about Sadie when you are away, but if anything were to happen (and I’m sure it won’t), you would be able to get back to her pretty quick.
I’m not sure about the supplements I’m afraid. My inclination would be to keep her on them unless they are putting her at any risk or giving her nasty side effects. I’ll be interested to know what your vet suggests.
Love and hugs to you and Sadie,
Mary and Mable x
Hi all. I’m still up in the air about the Atopica. It’s such a small dose, one 10mg every five days. I took the liberty of writing Dr. Hamilton, which was her original vet that left the practice. I have not heard back from him. I asked him about it all, the taking her completely off the Atopica (and why) and the 1/2 tab of 75mg Clopidogrel daily. I have lowered the milk thistle and kept the SAM-e the same (you’re right, the milk thistle CAN mess with their tummies.
I had to giver Sadie a Cerenia the other night after the Atopica. She was squirming all over the place, could not get comfortable. Today, she is finally fine, resting in one spot, legs up again (too cute, isn’t it, when they sleep that way – all is right with the world!). It has been five days since last dose and I am afraid to give her another and have not. Her mouth has great color, but she’s still doing the lip smacking when she’s resting. I just don’t know.
She’s still on the 5mg prednisone daily and 1/2 tab of Pepcid. I feel if I could stop the Atopica, I could certainly stop the Clopidogrel right? And If I could stop the Atopica completely today, I’d have two weeks before we travel. Considering (see I still have to have your blessings!!) the situation, what do you think?
Love and hugs, don’t know what to do next, Linda and okay Sadie
PS – We do her PCV again tomorrow – :)
Hi Linda, I wish I could help out with your questions. Any kind of weaning is so scary!
I’m so glad you have the cerenia and that helps, I have it for Ashki too as his tummy was really bothering him when he was on the doxy and now I have it for “just in case.”
Did Sadie ever smack her lips before all this?
Not much help, but we are thinking of you and lovely Sadie and sending love and hugs.

Hi all. Sadie’s PCV today was 46. I discussed all with two vets there today and we decided to stop the Atopica and see how it goes. Her last one was June 13th. We’ll do 1/4 tab of the Plavix, instead of 1/2 (75mg) for five days and then stop that. So, she’ll be on 5mg prednisone and 1/2 (10mg) Pepcid only, besides the milk thistle, cell food SAM-e and PetTinic. I have lowered the milk thistle and cell food SAM-e a bit too, but continuing with the PetTinic. We’ll see.
I leave tomorrow for Atlanta and Pat & Sadie are home here, alone. Say a little prayer okay?! This could be great or who knows?!!!! I’ll be back early Monday afternoon and he’ll be with her until Monday morning. Goodness.
If I don’t respond, I’ll be checking but unable to write – it’s going to be our typical crazy in Hotlanta with lots of people there. ;)
Love and hugs, Linda & Sadie
