It has been a long while since I have posted on Almandine and sadly on December 30th (8 months after diagnosis) we had to put him to sleep. He let me know it was time and probably should have been done the day before but I heard that it was best to wait 24 hours. I’m curious about what might have caused his sudden decline. A week prior one of his front legs swelled and we started another round of Doxycycline. Several days later, some bumps appeared along his other leg and started to open like bloody blisters. I’m assuming they were ulcers? I noticed them also on his ears and hind paws. Anyway, despite the topical treatments and all the meds (all. the. meds.) he stopped eating. For a day I was able to hand feed him dry kibble piece by piece but he wouldn’t eat the cooked food. The next day we started force feeding him the soft food after pureeing it and he began throwing it up. THEN we tried the slippery elm AGAIN. We were up all night trying to rush him to the tile floor or back porch when he started heaving. Forget the stairs to the yard. His lack of muscles couldn’t handle it. I went to work for two hours the next day and I came home to many messes (vomit and diarrhea) around the house. He was breathing fast and shallow, I knew it was time. Perhaps it doesn’t really matter what caused the end result. It hurts more than any dog I’ve lost before and that may be because he was so vulnerable and relied so much on me. I sincerely appreciate your quick responses to my many questions in the beginning and how much was put into your bridge page. Good luck to the rest of the IMHA dogs out there, I am thinking about all of you and praying that this year we might find a cure.
Oh, Amber
This is such terrible news. I’m so sad to hear that Almandine has crossed The Bridge & you must be devastated. I am sending you my deepest condolences, which are lnever enough. He had extra time with you because you fought so hard to get him better, but it’s never long enough. Please don’t dwell on what happened at the end, otherwise you will beat yourself up, thinking you did something wrong or didn’t do something – I know you are a great fur Mum – please cherish the extra time you spent with each other. Our Bridge page says it all, written by someone who knows what losing a beloved dog feels like, and I’m glad you’ve found some comfort there during this painful time.
So sorry, Amber. Dean will always be with you in you heart & by your side.
Love Sheena xxxx
Dear Amber,
I am so sorry to read this. It is sure a very traumatic way to loose a dog. Of course I don’t know exactly how you feel, but I have a pretty good idea. For the first few days after loosing your dear friend Dean, all these pictures of his last hours come back to mind. Sleepless nights can be the worst. But I can tell you that in time your love to this boy is greater that this disease and the pictures of the wonderful time together will come back to your mind and push out all those sad ones. You gave Dean a wonderful life and he payed you back in unconditional love. That is just what dogs do. I am glad you found the Bridge page helpful. Please accept my sincere condolences.

My 8 yr old standard poodle has many “faty deposits” under the skin. My vet checks 1 and made this diagnosis. She is very healthy otherwise. Should I start her on Bio-Algae Concentrates to see if they will reduce these deposits? Are the relatively safe for her?
Thank you.
My dog has IMHA …. what Vet Clinic do you go to would help me a lot. I think you are Detroit area? I am in Huntington Woods, and need a veterinarian …. Have been to Blue Pearl for emergencies re my Doxies, but truly need a good veterinarian. Help?
Hi Sandy, I’m so sorry to hear your dog is sick. That’s a hard question. I’m not sure who was from the Detroit area. I’m from Sydney Australia.
Dr Dodds is brilliant with this disease. As a possibility, you could contact her office and ask for a recommendation for a vet in your area. She would certainly have contacts as she supplies 40% of all the blood used transfusions needed by dogs in USA, so I’m sure they may be able to help.

PS, feel free to start a post about your dog. We’d love to help in whatever way we can. Go to the bottom of the page.
