- Poodle 11 pounds
Hi! It’s been awhile since I posted but I need your ladies help! Someone I know poodle was recently diagnosed with AIHA. Their 11 pound poodle has a PCV of 11. They can’t afford transfusions. I urged them to get the vet to prescribe pred which they did but feels too little too late. What is s good dose and what dose of baby aspirin should I recommend?
Thank you!
Jen
Hey Jen!
The dosage of prednisone is 1mg per pound per day, given in two doses, so at 11 pounds, I would think say, 15mg, giving 7.5mg twice a day with food.
Azathioprine is not very expensive and that could be added at 1mg per pound given for say 7-10 days.
Aspirin is 1.1mg per pound per day. A baby aspirin is 81mg so maybe give about 1/6th.
Also, have a look at Dr Jean’s protocol as well on this page:

Please pass on my very best wishes.

Thank you Vally for this info. I will definitely pass this along. He asked me about some immune boosting things called Glyconutrients or an immune regulator called transfer factor plus. Have you heard of these drugs/supplements?
I have some old cyclosporine I could overnight to them but I need to make sure that since it’s old it won’t be harmful. Is there anything else that can buy them time until the drugs kick in besides transfusions? It’s hard to believe it’s been 4 yrs since my Maggie was diagnosed and she is suffering from CHF but still doing well.
Thanks again
Jen
Jen, I’m never too keen on anything that is boosting the immune system, as we are trying to suppress it right now as for some reason, it has gone into overdrive. The hard drugs are what stop it doing that, so I wouldn’t go that way.
I’m thrilled to hear Maggie is doing good. We thought Bingo had CHF late 2016, but it turned out to be a cancer and I lost him in January 2017. I still miss that boy so much.
Love Vally
Vally,
I’m so sorry to hear about Bingo. You must miss him so. We all know how much you loved him.
An update on the poodle, the pred is starting to work & hematocrit rose to 15 so they are out of transfusion range! I passed along the reasons why they should be suppressing the immune system instead of boosting it right now. It’s been four years since I researched all this stuff and can’t believe how much I forgot.
I will forever be in debt to everyone on this site that helped me throughout the years with support and advice❤️

Jen,
I’m sorry to read this. One of our past moderator’s Poodle developed this and I am wondering if she would be willing to help with the owner. Her Poodle improved but then relapsed quickly.
So that is something to keep in mind about the treatment protocol, don’t get too overeager to get off the drugs. In some of these dogs Dr. Dodds recommends a lifetime of lower dose prednisone to prevent this from happening.
I’d rather see that than for this poodle to relapse.
my best, patrice
Hello Jen,
My poodle had AIHA, went into temisdion and was pretty much back to normal. Because the high doses of prednisone caused awful side effects I was eager to lower it and even stop it all together. As far as I remember my dog, a Standard Poodle of about 50 lbs was still on a small dose of prednisone when he relapsed. Maybe the dose was too low? I will never know. It is very tricky to lower the prednisone at the right rate and dose. Better slow and small reduction and live with some side effects, than fast and big reductions. The sad story of my red poodle boy happened more than 8 years ago so I can’t remember the exact recommended dose and time to reduce, I am sure someone can give you better numbers than me. Although my dog died a year after diagnosis, I know it is possible for a dog to recover completely!
Best wishes,
Brigitte
