- Flea and Tick Prevention
My dog Lita 3.5 years old was recently diagnosed with AIHA. This is my second go around with this nasty autoimmune disorder. Its two weeks later now after being in the hospital for three nights and two blood transfusions. I am happy to say that Lita’s labs came back great with liver, kidney (one kidney) and other counts getting back to normal. She is currently on Atopica 150 2xdaily. I will be switching her to generic soon due to inflated price. She is also on 40mg of prednisolone (20 morning and 20 at night). She currently weighs about 63 pounds. Use to be 76. If anyone is wondering what I feed her I started with only ground turkey then slowly adding soft dog food and green beans. She also started eating hard food again which I have not seen in several months. Oh she likes turkey and beef hot dogs but that is only treat for after pill time. So happy she is eating again. When I dealt with AIHA the first time I lived in Alaska and did not have to worry about Flea and Tick prevention. Well I am in Florida now and need advise on what to and not to do. I have been giving her interceptor for heart worm prevention and frontline plus for fleas. Any suggestions? ideas?
Hello Hope. I am so sorry you are going through this with Lita.
Where are you in FL? I am in Tampa. Sadie too, relapsed in 2015, bad, same three nights in emergency (Blue Pearl) and two transfusions. She actually just relapsed again (she’s a rare one) but we caught it, although bounce back, this had been a tough one (this is actually her 6th relapse). She’s hanging in. 😊
Sadie is on HeartGuard for heart worms every 45 days (per Dr. Dodds) and nothing for flea and tick. With her history, I did n’t want tochance it. But, I do use Diatomaceous Earth religiously, everywhere, inside the house and outside.
Best to you both. Sending huge hugs,
Linda and Sadie
Hi Linda & Sadie
Sorry to hear that Sadie has had relapses. Once is enough for sure! I hope she is doing well. This is Litas first and hopefully only go around. My dog Shiloh was diagnosed in 2003. She made it! Was 3 years old and lived to 13 with no relapse. Thank you for the information on what Sadie uses for flea and heart.. l need to get a plan ready and all info helps. Was Sadie on preventative (small dose) of prednisone or cyclopsoerine when she had relapse? Shiloh was able to get off all drugs but I think she was a fortunate one. She was overdosed on antibiotics that we believed triggers it. Lita I Suspect required shots triggered. I never did let Shiloh get another shot. Lita won’t be getting any either..we wish Sadie all the best!! Hugs!!
