While it’s quiet, I though I’d let you all know, we’ve made it down to the 1.25mg prednisolone daily – yeah!!! (Still cyclosporine 25mg every 2 days).
It’s been one full month on this dose and he’s still very cute in pink. No lameness either. Funny because the joint pain scares me almost as much as lowered bloods because to see him in pain just terrifies me. He’s on this dose for 2 months and his specialist suggested I could take him to the local vet for a PCV check in the meantime if I had any doubts, but I haven’t bothered.
The one month mark is important as he has previously made it to about 3 weeks before he became lame again many moons back with a drop in his PCV, whereupon dosage had to go back up again.
I had a scare the other day when he ran up the front steps at home and suddenly stopped on the second last step and just froze – something hurt. He seemed okay immediately after that and I pressed and prodded everywhere and couldn’t find any tender spots. A day later, I was roughhousing with him and playing tug-of-war with his blanket and again, I think it was his mouth, something hurt and he just stopped. He’s been fine since though. No problem with stairs, so I’m wondering if he may have knocked his mouth or face going up the stairs that first time. I’ve looked in his mouth but can’t see anything – wow is he sick of me checking his mouth and prodding all his teeth. He has no trouble eating dried chicken necks which are quite hard.
Anyway, for the very first time in forever, I’ve noticed a slight different in his desperation for food too. Whereas before he would bark non-stop until he gets his food, he’ll occasionally now politely wait for his food and only carry on if dad is about, to scare him off when his food is being prepared – he has it in his head that dad is going to steal and eat his yummy raw chicken. The polite boy isn’t always there yet though, he still has his ravenous moments like today, when he barked his head off for food and then flew out the front door when I suggested a walk – we don’t walk far in the mornings, he’s just looking for cat poo until I drag him off and he then makes no pretense he’s out for a walk, and heads home – for a treat – of course – after all that walking.
Lots of love to all.
Vally & the lean machine.
Yay Bingo! What a funny boy with his idiosyncrasies :) We are celebrating the good news with you!
Bingo is so entertaining! Crazy how paranoid we get after this disease has hit us and our dog. Before AIHA you probably would not have worried at all. Thanks for sharing Bingo’s endeavors Vally.

Vally and Bingo – GREAT news!! It is scary. Sadie was just lowered on pred this week too, so I totally understand how you’re feeling. When it gets as low as you are with Bingo, that’s the tricky part right?!
Too funny about the ‘food’ and his ravenous anticipation! He’s a hoot.
Bingo is doing wonderful. Keep it up Bingo boy! Keep smiling Vally – it’s okay, not a bad omen. Ha.
Love, Linda and Sadie
Great news! Love to hear about Bingo – he sounds like such a huge character!
Lots of love

Linda what dose is Sadie on now and how are the poos? Bingo’s poos are definitely firmer than they’ve been in forever now. Another bonus.
The plan is that next month his vet wants to drop him down from 1/4 tablet a day to 1/4 every second day. The skip a days have, in the past, been the cause of a relapse. Last time we had him on 2.5mg a day and tried to skip a day, even tried skipping every third day first – didn’t work.
At only 1.25mg, his vet feels it’s such a low dose, it’s unlikely to be a problem (of course no guarantees) BUT I don’t think I can do it.
I’m going to suggest 1/8 tablet every second day (yes I’ve tried and I can cut those tiny little things into an eighths). If he copes with that, then I’ll be ready to skip that one every second day and he’ll remain on the quarter tablet (1.25mg) every second day.
Still a month away. Not that I’m worried or anything.
Hi Vally!
Your boy Bingo is a cheeky superstar indeed – it is amazing the little differences you notice when you keep lowering the pred, even though it IS very scary. I know what you mean about the pain – I think we all dread having to alter anything because of a problem other than AIHA & of upsetting that wobbly apple cart. I never used to be paranoid like this either, but I openly admit that every little unusual thing has me worrying! I hope the eight of a pill works out – sounds like the best idea to me.
Love from us all to you & The Entertainer
