- Pred Wean – When Do Side Effects Dissipate?
Max has dropped from 40 mg of pred a day to 20 mg, and I was just wondering when we might see some of the side effects from the prednisone start to dissipate some? He is still incredibly hungry all the time, and does still have that “pred pant” going, especially now that it is very hot and humid here in AZ…just wasn’t sure when to expect some changes. Thank you for your input, as always. :)
Hi Trish. Poor Sadie has been on prednisone for 2 1/2 years. Sadie did stop panting so hard as we got low (she was on 4.5mg of pred mid-July) on the prednisone, but her ravenous appetite did not diminish much. Hence, I’m not much help on the hunger question.
But you will see most of the side effects go away as his pred is lowered. Hopefully, you will get Max completely off and you’ll see a huge (positive) change. The horrible, life saving drugs…….
You are doing a tremendous job with everything. You and Max are superstars!!!
Love, Linda and Sadie
Okay, I panicked a bit when I saw 40 to 20, but I checked back and saw that he went from 40 to 30 and now to 20. That’s roughly a 33% reduction which is a good reduction.
With the side effects, I remember seeing improvement quite quickly with his steadiness improving and muscles starting to come back, particularly his head, quite quickly.
Are you talking about food though. For some reason, Bingo still feels the need to insist he needs lots of food. The only meal I’ve been able to drop is his afternoon tea. Yep he was getting an afternoon tea. He now gets breakfast, lunch, dinner and a late night supper. Lunch and the late night are only very small meals. He’s not so hungry in the mornings any more and would rather have treats for breakfast – which he DOESN’T GET unless he’s eaten breakfast. Bingo is actually still on a small dose of prednisone daily, but I don’t think the dose should be impacting on his food – he says it does.

Hi Trish
I also found Worzel did improve quite quickly – 20mg is still reasonably high – I would say Worzel improved considerably when we got down to 10mg per day (he normally weighs about 23 kilos – but he was only 17/18 kilos when ill). He ate like a little piggy (or as they say in France, like an ogre!) for a long time. He can still eat like a little ogre now & is inclined to put weight on even now. Hope this helps!
Love & hugs to you & lovely Max

All very helpful! I am not seeing a huge difference in his hunger/panting, etc. but thought it might be a bit soon for that and you all pretty much confirmed my thoughts. He just had a manual PCV done at our regular vet’s office, and they said it is at 44 (at his last CBC from the specialist on 7/27, he was 42.9), so I am guessing this is still okay, considering the decreases in prednisone?
Oooh lovely PCV – that’s excellent news! You can carry on with the slow & steady reduction for sure – slowly, slowly, no relapsy! Most of us do see a small drop during the first few days of a reduction, but it soon goes up again, so good news all round for you. This is wonderful, Trish – well done Mr Max!
