- Split: Split: Split: Nula (5yr old English Cocker Spaniel)
Thank you for the replies! And thank you for the advice Patrice! That’s really handy info! Yes, sorry, Nula is on 100mg Atopica which is staying the same. And she was on 15mg prednisolone twice a day, and now she is on 10mg prednisolone twice a day. Sorry, I was so tired that evening and messed up my post. I’m going to do 15mg in the am and 10mg in the pm for the first week, then I’ll do 10mg in am and 10mg in the pm after that for the rest of the month. Or am I being paranoid an just go straight to 10 in am and pm? Just don’t want too much shock to her system! But in herself she’s doing really well! She’s wanting to do more but still no walks so I’m giving her her meals in activity toys now to give her a bit more fun. And she is definitely enjoying that! I’m making it part of our routine to be checking her gums before each meal (split her normal 2 meals into 4 now because she’s always asking for food) and she’s so good at it. She was great in her eye test too even when they put the strips in her eyes to test her tear production and when they put dye in her eyes too. So glad we’ve done training with her since she was a puppy with people touching her and checking her eyes, teeth, ears etc. My Dad came with me for the app on Friday and he was really impressed with her (his dog is terrible at the vets). So nice to know I’ve done well by her. I hope you are all well and your waggy ones are doing well xxxxxxx
Hi Ruth
Wonderful news about her blood results. You must be thrilled and very relieved. I am surprised they made an error with a clot, since they were the ones who told me about that particular problem! Anyway, Patrice’s advice is excellent and lots of food for thought.
I don’t think you are paranoid about taking the reduction more slowly, and I’d be inclined to agree. I also agree with the others about having a PCV check after each reduction, and not waiting a month. Nula will tell you a lot by her behaviour, but it is definitely worth keeping an eye on the lab values too.
Well done Ruth and Nula, you are doing fabulously!
Mary and Mable x
Hello Ruth and Nula. Reading your last post – so happy about the great news. :)
I too, check Sadie’s PCV every 10 days (now, low dose pred, 5mg daily, Atopica 10mg every 5 days – we’re nearing VERY low doses, hopefully) and CBC every month. But then, I’m super paranoid after her relapse. Actually, we were checking often then too, she just bottomed out on the too fast weaning. But this way we caught it at 21 and were able to up her meds immediately (back to square one) and start all over. Had we not been testing frequently, it would not have been a pleasant outcome, I’m sure. But here she is, today, doing very well. She is now testing ABOVE her pre-AIHA PCV. :)
Much love and way-to-go hugs, Linda and Sadie
Hi all, thank you Mary and Linda. Sorry for the lack of posts. It’s been a hectic week. Making some headway on my own health, booked in for exploratory op on my hip on Wednesday. So fingers crossed! Nula is doing really well. Pink gums still, no stomach upset (except the Atopica wind issues!) and lots of energy! So she seems to be tolerating the reduced prednisolone well. She’s on 10mg twice a day now. She’s still panting a lot and hungry all the time. But no puddles for a week now! So feeling pretty positive, just plodding along really. One thing though, she’s feeling better enough to start stalking and prodding the hedgehog in our garden. I don’t want her to get fleas or ticks, though I checked the hedgehog and no ticks atm. Is there anything I can use that’s safe? We were using Activyl. Is it safe? Or is there a safe alternative? I hope you’re all well and that your pups are all doing well too. Xxxxxxx
Hi Ruth. So glad to hear Nula is doing so well. The panting will start to slow, as she’s off the prednisone, or lowered dose, for a while. Sadie just now started slowing and she’s on 5mg daily now. Still the Atopica, 10mg daily, and yes – wind of something dead. ;)
I hope your exploratory surgery goes well. Goodness, how long will you be in the hospital? I am glad Nula is well enough for you to feel comfortable leaving her. That has to help. :)
About the ticks – I am so sorry, but I don’t really know. I know it’s a problem, but not where I live. NOTHING can survive where I live in this spray-to-kill-it-if-it- lives community. I don’t even walk Sadie on the sidewalk here, worried about overspray. We walk in the middle of the road. Thank goodness it’s a circle and we don’t get much traffic. :)
I know someone will respond to your question about what to do about the ticks. Isn’t the Activyl for fleas only? With AIHA/IMHA I stay totally clear of any flea/tick meds and give Sadie (because it’s FL and the mosquitos are ever present) heart worm prevention. The meds for this too, are not good, but the heart worm disease would certainly be a death sentence. The lesser of the evils is to give it to her. It makes her sick for a day and then she’s okay. I don’t like that at all, but we deal with it. She’s on Tri-Heart, Plus. I do know that Dr. Dodds promotes using at least a heart worm preventative depending on where the pup lives and the presence of mosquitos, again, lesser of the evils.
Please let us know how your exploratory surgery goes. Also, how Nula is progressing.
We are sending well wishes for you and huge hugs to Nula on her continuing job well done (doing!),
Linda and Sadie
