- Pit Bull Versus Vaccines; Which is more dangerous?
Hello everyone,
First off I want to say I am sorry that you are going through this with your loved fur-babies and also you have stumbled onto something that can truly save your sanity, restore your hope and save your dogs life by clicking on this website. Now on to my story…
I have an almost 2 year old Pit Bull named Ruby (she will be 2 on Aprils fools day). When I saw her for the first time she had me wrapped around her little paw.
I am currently working long hours as well as having a rather terrible commute so I thought that it would be a great idea to put her in doggy daycare while I was not home. In order to have her accepted into the program she was needing several vaccines… apparently 4. She was given (3 year Rabies, 1 year Influenza, 1 year Bordetella and a 3 year Distemper Parvo). When they brought out all of the needles I asked them directly if this was safe as it seemed like a lot to give at one time, I was reassured that she would be “fine”.
Day after day she seemed to really be enjoying daycare. (even made a few friends with some other dogs and puppies) had 3 play groups everyday! She was always so tired when we got home that she would just cuddle up with me and we would go to bed.
On February 22nd I went over to my parents house with Ruby of course, and she seemed depressed, just not herself. My mom and I both thought that she needed a vet appointment so I scheduled her one that night for Friday the 24th (only date available). The next morning I am taking Ruby into daycare and I ask them if they could please keep an eye on her as she hasn’t been acting normal and seems depressed “Of course I will! She has her favorite toy that she is constantly running around with!” I go to work and about an hour later I get a call, they noticed that her gums were white and the vet was able to be fit her in at noon that day. They said that I didn’t need to leave work and someone would just call me when they had more information… Panic sets in. I call the vets office (they are right next door from each other) and confirm if they have her health insurance on file, of course not. I end up forwarding them a claim form with all of her information on it telling them that I am consenting if anything major needs to be done. At 11:45am I get a call from the Dr. “Do you realize your dog is extremely sick??” And I told her everything from the start. I asked again, I can come down right now, it’s no problem.. “no don’t come yet I need to do a few things then I will give you a call”… so I finished up one more thing at work and was cleaning my desk when the Dr. called back “You need to take Ruby to the animal ER as she is needing a blood transfusion as quickly as possible, her red blood cell count is at 8% see you in a couple of minutes!” umm, I work far away! I made the best time I could while crying and trying to stay calm. My boyfriend had off that day and I called him and said he was coming with as I needed someone there with me. He ended up carrying Ruby from the vet office to the car and the car to the ER. I didn’t want her to waste any energy if she didn’t need to. 3 days in the ER.. One blood transfusion, multiple tests later and I am referred to a different Dr., one that specializes in Internal Medicine. When she was discharged she was holding at about 18% (was at 20% right after the transfusion)
After more and more tests, Ruby being shaved, poked, scanned and everything else under the sun the Dr. came and told me that she believed that Ruby was not generating red blood cells… She recommended that I contact the manufactures of the vaccinations that were given to her as it was most likely the cause. (Normally when a dog is at 8% they will most likely not be able to pick their head up, she thought that this was a gradual decrease as she was adapting to not having it). My heart was broken. She is only 2, this shouldn’t be happening to her! I paid money for this to be done to my baby, I was so lost. I didn’t know what to do. That night I decided to take a nice long bath so I could try to relax. I started researching on my phone, then boom. I found this website. People that have gone through this and their dogs have lived? It isn’t a death sentence? So I reached out for help. I didn’t know what to expect. I think it was less than 12 hours later that they contacted me. I sent them the test results from Ruby, told them all of the above and like super heroes they jumped right into action. Because of Patrice, Vally, Linda and last but certainly not least Dr. Dodds Ruby is now on a treatment plan to get her better. She is still in the beginning of all of this. Everyday I make sure to spoil her as well as telling her that she needs to fight this in order to get better! This is going to be long road but you know what? She is worth everything. There is no limit to what I will do for her. Her next appointment is Tuesday the 14th, I will be keeping you all up to date on her journey down this road.
If you made it through my very long post the last thing I want to say is to not lose hope. Your fur-baby needs you to be strong WITH them as they go through this. Don’t be scared to reach out. These are real people that have the same goal in mind. To help you! To be there for you! To give you information that has worked for them, and to guide you out of the darkness that you are facing.

Deanna, we love long posts.
I’m so very glad you found us.
You reacted very quickly to help your Ruby and that is the most important thing.
You’re right, we do what we think is best for our dogs and that includes vaccinations. That’s what I thought responsible pet ownership was. Who ever would have thought that they can trigger a disease like this. I used to race to the vets on the same day, each year, to vaccinate Bingo, so that I didn’t run late by even a day and risk his life. Little did I know. I suddenly questioned it all after he had a seizure about a month after his shots. Vets said it had nothing to do with the shots or it would have happened sooner. One of the injections was a yearly heartworm injection, which stays in the body for more than a year. So I have no doubts about the seizures. After the seizures started, I also came across Dr Jean Dodds and her vaccination protocols. I was the first person in a trendy Sydney vet clinic to ask for a titer test. I remember sitting on the phone for about 20 minutes whilst they found out how to arrange it. When the titers came back, Bingo had heaps of immunity, so I never had to vaccinate him again, and in fact the seizures stopped.
Good luck on Tuesday. Let’s see a photo of her. Use the Upload Your Photo on the right (or down the bottom on a pad). It takes a little while to show as they have to be allowed on, just to protect the site from hackers.

I am so sorry you had to go through this but I also offer hope to owners with IMHA pups. Coal was 4 months old when she almost died from over vaccination. I am so glad you were able to get help for your sweet girl. It is a pleasure to have you here. Keep us posted on Rubys condition.
Warmly,
Amy & the Girls. ( Coal ,Leia and Vidia)
AmyE,
4 months old. That is so young. I am also so sorry that this has happened to you and your puppy Coal!
Ruby dropped back down to 12% after her appointment on the 14th. She needed another blood transfusion which only bumped her up to 18%. While this was a hard pill to swallow (you want them better NOW) I figured it took her a while to get as bad as she was and it is going to take time in order for her to get better.
She had another blood test on Wednesday the 29th and I am sooooo happy to report that she is now at 32%!! I cried tears of joy, I happy danced and I have written and called everyone I know that has been rooting for Ruby’s recovery!
This is not a death sentence! With the right medications, diet, vitamins and love there is a chance for your dog to beat this! Is it easy? No! But is your dogs life worth it? Yes!
Deanna & Ruby 💕
